Unit Two: Fate vs. Free will

Essential Question: What determines one life? (fate vs. free-will)
Stylistic focus: Diction

DESCRIPTION: In this four-week unit, students will focus on the factors and barriers that may determine the outcome of one’s life. As students continue on this journey of what contributes to the making of a whole person, students will read texts that examine characters whose lives do not seem like their own. Students will begin by reading Allegory of the Cave. Students will explore the notion that society keeps its inhabitants in the dark. If this is case, can we blame individuals for lacking the ability to be authentic? Discussions will be had to determine whether people prefer darkness or whether individuals are waiting for someone to enlighten them so that they may see the light.

Given that knowledge and wisdom are major ideas from the previous text, students will then read Oedipus Rex. This text explores how humans place faith in a higher being or power and place themselves on a path that has been pre-determined. A major question in this unit: Is fate the tool of the wise or ignorant? Students will discuss the consequences/limitations of fate vs. free will and decide whether happiness is given or earned.
